i created a new original drawing particularly for this exhibition.
"The Last Mermaid" 14" x 16" graphite and ink on watercolor paper

a 50 edition print of "plumlit night" will be available tomorrow, tuesday @ 2pm pst.
the print is 20.5" x 24" in size and produced by "static medium". i’m very impressed with the physical print, lovely rich colors and a bit larger in size than most previous prints. it can be purchased through the printshop ~here~ on the release date.

For this piece, I experimented with a cooler color palette ( greys, blues, purples, greens ) and really liked the change from the warms i’ve been using so often. Just below is the sketch that originally inspired the painting.

hello, it has been a while since my last post… i’ve been pretty deep in work and have seemed to lose track of time. it is hard to believe it is already approaching may!!

…. right now i’m working on a 12 x 12 painting for a group exhibit in UK with london miles gallery / thinkspace gallery.

new paintings and illustrations are in progress as well including my first foray into fashion which i will talk more about later in the year… and a solo exhibition in october at corey helford gallery. i seemed to have developed a wariness of showing sneak peeks at work that is unfinished… so until works are completed, i apologize if things get a little quiet around here.

✤ in other news, i am preparing a new limited edition of "anchor". it will be available this saturday, may 1st.

also ~ i started a tumblr blog for my doodles and otherwise thrown away or forgotten things.

+ on may 7th i will be in LA to see allison sommers & João’s opening at the newly located thinkspace gallery. follwed by mari inukai’s and luke chue’s opening (may 8th) at copro gallery ! this will be the first time out of my studio in a many, many weeks so i’m looking forward to a nice little break and seeing new art

For my piece I decided to draw 3 characters inspired from the story, each on a small (5 x 7) panel framed together as a set. I took lots of close up photos the morning before they were framed, then after framed (artificial vs. natural light accounts for color variations) This is my first attempt with a technique I made up basically starting with a light pencil drawing, washing it with ink and light gesso and drawing over it again.

 

I recently completed work on a new commission painting titled "Garden Nest". i posted a few progress sketches in post a while back. the painting will be on display as part of David B. Smith Gallery Group Exhibition, Part 2 which opens on Friday, February 19th and runs through March 20th.

here are my attempts to draw real people. i know they are way cartoony… but if i manage to capture a hint of personality i will be perfectly happy.

i made 2 goals for this year, #1 is to get out more, # 2 is to attempt to be more organized and professional. so far, i have made no progress in getting out more, though there are signs of hope. yesterday, i made the first step of progress in getting organized! luckily i got in contact with an architect who had some used filed cabinets he was trying to get rid of for cheap. when i went to his house there were ALOT more than i expected and he gave me ALL of them. they had been stored outside for along time and a bit wet from rain and some were also full of blue prints from his old projects. i had to remove his blue prints and stack them in his garage, they were damp but the paper was amazingly resilient. i had no way to get the cabinets home but luckily my dad was off and has a huge trailer and really wanted help, otherwise i would have only been able to take one. the whole scene was kind of exaggerated and surreal to me… the sky was blazing from a sunset and my dad and dylan were loading up all these massive cabinets while i was petting the architect’s st bernard. when i woke up this morning i had to go into the garage to make sure i wasn’t dreaming it all last night.. and yes it was real, i have many cabinets now, and alot of organizing to do

i found this bird book at a second hand shop recently and like to look at it before going to sleep. i always pick a picture book to keep beside my bed to take my mind off any thoughts from the day. i’m drawing birds ( birdlike)
creatures all the time lately. of course, the birds i draw are not at all realistic, like the ones depicted in the books i love. i seem to only use certain vague similarities, like an elementary shape or a curve in a neck or beak. the most intriguing thing about the exotic birds is their ability to make courtship displays; i cannot get over the beauty and oddness of it.
