i found this bird book at a second hand shop recently and like to look at it before going to sleep. i always pick a picture book to keep beside my bed to take my mind off any thoughts from the day. i’m drawing birds ( birdlike)
creatures all the time lately. of course, the birds i draw are not at all realistic, like the ones depicted in the books i love. i seem to only use certain vague similarities, like an elementary shape or a curve in a neck or beak. the most intriging thing about the exotic birds are their ability to make coutrship displays; i cannot get over the beauty and oddness of it.

here are some progress images of a piece i’m currently working on, these images are only part of a larger painting. the piece is 33" x 40" with a lot of detail so i have been focusing on sections at a time at about the size of 11 x 14. i’ll share the whole piece when it is finished… soon !

the theme of the exhibit is centered around endangered species.
i choose a pika for my subject
they are not listed as an endangered species but there it is possibility they will be. i first learned about them from this podcast a while back.

There will be a very special exhibit over at Corey Helford Gallery this month (opening dec 12) called the "Multiplane Group Exhibit", each artist will paint on 3 layers – one panel and two sheets of glass…a style based on the multi-plane camera process used in early disney animations.

Nov. 27th. i hear this will be the final vivisect show…i wish it wasn’t though. it was such a lovely idea, the theme.
here is my drawing. it is a continuation of characters from "mari gold the bee". this time it’s marigold the bee in "an afternoon of helping flowers" made with graphite and ink and colored pencils (watercolor pencils)

the opening at Copro Gallery is a week away { nov. 7th } and i’m busy getting the last things together. there will be a new print available thru the gallery the night of the opening + 6 rare artists proofs from past editions { below: i decided to mildly embellish each with iridescent paint } they are close to my last AP prints so i wanted to do something a little special for them.

a mounted + framed print of "starlight crumble" will be available on the night of the opening. i saw the prints this weekend and they came out perfect, can’t wait to see how they look in the frames too. ok.. i must get back to painting because i’m still working on two small (9×12) ones.. almost finished ^_^

dylan and i have been working on an fun animation project over the last year. although i don't do any of the 3d modeling myself, i find the process absolutely amazing. i love to watch and i get a delightful feeling seeing simple sketches turned into these movable creatures within the computer! i often wish {outloud} that i could pull these characters out of the computer. so dylan surprised me by printing a bear character who is part of a scene in the animation!!!! as soon as i saw this, i had an immediate desire to print more characters. super antsy to play with more 3d printing, thankU technology!!!!

i posted the photos here - bear comes to life from beginning to end!!!

collaboration piece “crazy for cult”

here's the piece greg and i worked on for crazy 4 cult, we choose "the never-ending story"
greg talks about it on his blog + i add my thoughts {here}

the process started with sketching rough ideas. then greg's dad made this beautiful panel.. his dad is awesome and let me order some extras for myself, for future paintings! i can never get enough panels and these are fantastic, the BEST !

here are some of my rough sketches/ ideas of elements i initially wanted to incorporate.. my fav things inspired from the story: the tower that looks like a flower. the bat. i mused of the princess having an earthy look.

later, i decided to close the eyes and change the direction of movement to illustrate a turbulence or wind. that's what she looks like with her eyes open (above)

greg's imagery really pops out, when you u look very close the brushstrokes are quite incredible.

this photo is a bit bright.. almost washed out.. the colors are slightly richer and much warmer in real life.

that was fun ^__^

two new prints, "trampoline" and "dust wings" (below) are being prepared to be released sometime this month.
"trampoline" will be a larger print at 100 edition and "dust wings" will be smaller in size at 300 ed. we are hoping to have them ready within the next two weeks.

for the remainder of the spring, summer, and early fall i will be working on my next solo exhibit.

this is the most time i’ve ever had to paint, and it is a wonderful change for me. i do not feel rushed and can focus more happily. below photos are recent two paintings in beginning stages.

.even though i have more time than ever before, the paintings might take longer than i expect so i am reminded to keep on task.

i donated my handmade needle-felted wool creature to the community charity art auction "dish" which is taking place friday april 3rd @ las vegas springs preserve. the charity is raising money to help aid hunger. many local artists painted on dishes and all of them will be for auction to the charity. info on the event can be found here

for the exhibit i produced a new body of work unique to my typical medium of wood panel.
all works were initiated by a graphite drawing then colored in with inks and gouache.
the process involves mostly drawing.. so i think it's safe to call these illustrations or watercolor works.
it's been a busy year, painting constantly, always hustling bustling... its was very good to take time and focus on the simple things.. to me that is the act of drawing. playful, spontaneous, quick to execute, space for ideas. it was nice to reconnect with these elements while working on these pieces.

wow!! i had a good time :) :)
i didn’t get a chance to go through the goodie bag from the event until i got home last night. i dumped everything
out on my table and OH MY…

i couldn’t fit all the goods into one camera shot but here are my favs.

i feel really lucky to have been invited.. every one was sooo friendly and the whole experience was a treat.
i honestly expected to be burnt out afterward, because i sometimes feel that way after being around lots of people - but the affect was opposite.
the entire event was very laid back yet somehow vivid. i left feeling rejuvenated and inspired. i give the whole weekend an A ++ i only wish it lasted a little longer! now i cant wait till next year!

my work for the mondo bizzarro exhibit (december 5th "_" ) is coming along pleasantly. i love the delicate and spontaneous feeling with working on cotton. there is much i had to learn along the way but things are opening up now that i’ve found a relationship with the mediums.

after working on paper for months, going back to the wood panel and acrylics seemed much easier. i noticed i use some of the watercolor wash technique in my newest piece for baby tattooville. i wet the surface prior to applying the wash ( the technique commonly used w/ watercolor) and was able to get a smooth effect very easily. this piece will be for the baby-tattoville event Oct. 3rd.

i had to finish this one quickly so i sanded and gessoed the deck and did a light pencil sketch embellished with a little ink.
